I haven’t written much on the blog so far, so I wanted to give a short preface. Most of my writing is journaling, and that will come through here on the blog. Thanks for reading.
“Play to your strengths.”
What does that mean?
Play: Engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose. “the children were playing outside” (Oxford Languages)
Strength: A good or beneficial quality or attribute of a person or thing. “the strengths and weaknesses of their sales and marketing operation” (Oxford Languages)
Play to (one’s) strengths:
- To prioritize using one’s natural abilities and specific skills, especially by pursuing tasks or goals suited to such skills. “After his disappointing Western-themed family drama, it’s nice to see the director once again playing to her strengths with a film grounded in humor and wit.”
- To put one in a position that allows them to best use their natural abilities and specific skills. “We’re going to have everyone try out the different positions on the field so we can find everyone a role that plays to their strengths.” (The Free Dictionary)
This is something I’ve been contemplating. Like many, my everyday life is affected by the pandemic. So I’m asking – myself, to be clear 🙂 – What are my strengths, and how can I play to them in today’s trying times?
These days are different from any other days I’ve seen before. Playing to my strengths now is different than I would have liked or hoped. I feel sad and disappointed about that, and that’s ok.
But still. Even under less than ideal circumstances, I have strengths. Writing is one, and it is one I can play to even during a pandemic. That seems like a good place to start, right? Write? Wright. Right. Spelling is overrated*. Write. Wright. Right**.
*Wrong. It’s just that it’s late, and it sounded funny.
**To be thorough: Rite.
As I said, this is more stream-of-conscious, journal-style writing. It helps me process life, and I am grateful for it. If you’re reading, I hope you enjoy.

Alyssa, what a great concept! I had not thought of playing to my strengths during the pandemic. I will be processing that in days to come. Thanks for sharing 🙂
